Klarity vs Done: Which Online Therapy is Better?

ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, affects millions of children in the US. If left unaddressed, ADHD can progress through adolescence and can have a severe impact on your mental health throughout adulthood. According to statistics in ADDitude Magazine, 2.5% to 4.4% of adults in the US are likely to suffer from ADHD, with a diagnosis rate of 5.4%.

This can even lead to other mental and behavioral disorders, including depression, anxiety, autism, and more.

Considering ADHD has serious health implications, it becomes important to manage the signs and symptoms in the right way to prevent disruptive behavior. To help you seek the correct treatment on the correct platform, I have compared two of the most preferred online mental healthcare ADHD specialists – Klarity and Done.

Comparison Between Klarity and Done

These are the pointers that will help you understand the major differences between the two widely used virtual mental therapy platforms – Klarity and Done.

1. How Does it Work?

How Does it Work

Klarity

To enroll in Klarity’s plans, I followed the below steps:

  • I took the free assessment to check if the platform offers services to treat my mental condition and if they were available in my state.
  • Klarity was available in my state, so I was asked to book my first appointment by evaluating the bio and other information of licensed practitioners on the platform.
  • I was charged $149 USD for my first consultation. It went on for half an hour which seemed like a decent duration, but it may feel shorter for patients who may have too many things to discuss about their mental health.
  • Post qualifying the criteria, I had to pay a small refundable fee of $10 as booking cost before my provider made a customized plan.
  • Every follow-up session of mine involved progress tracking, treatment modifications, and any changes to the medication if needed, which cost $59 USD.
  • The prescription refills later just cost $25 USD per refill

Switching Providers at Klarity?

I had to make an email request to the customer support team at [email protected]. On approval based on my past medical records, a new follow-up appointment costing less ($59 USD) was scheduled in which I was given a completely new treatment plan.

I would not say the process is low-effort, plus the change in providers is at the practitioners’ discretion, so it can be a bit exhausting.

My providers regularly monitored my progress and made important changes to the treatment plan or medication as and when required.

Klarity does not need any proof pertaining to previous ADHD diagnoses and treatments done, if any. The team relies on its own evaluations to determine the appropriate line of treatment, which varies from patient to patient. This is great for personalized ADHD treatments.

Done

I was required to be eligible for Done’s services by taking an online exam. The platform then prompted me to schedule an appointment, post which my credit card was charged a $20 USD non-refundable fee. The balance amount of $179 USD (the initial session of 25 minutes costs $199 USD) is deducted 48 hours before the consultation time.

I also had the option to cancel this appointment within 48 hours, but any rescheduling, if required, is chargeable.

On meeting the above criteria, I was admitted to the Done membership plan worth $79 USD per month, which will be deducted automatically.

2. Pricing/Affordability

Pricing/Affordability

Klarity

Klarity does not have a subscription-based pricing model that is way more economical than in-person psychiatric services. So, I paid for standalone sessions and refills. This, however, does not include medication costs.

I have outlined the pricing below:

  • The first appointment costs $149 USD which is a 30-minute session with a psychiatrist. It is the primary consultation call about holistic treatment details and prescription management.
  • The secondary sessions lasting for about 15 minutes are worth $59 USD. It focuses on refining the treatment for improved outcomes.
  • Finally, the medication refills cost $25 USD which also includes any alterations to the prescription if needed (Not all states offer this service).
  • Face-to-face sessions are also provided in some states, depending on the severity of the case. The cost is in the range of $99 USD to $250 USD. This is a part of Klarity’s flexible structure of appointment scheduling which makes the process more convenient.

Here are some important dos and don’ts that I followed, and you should too:

  • Always schedule your follow-up appointments well in advance, ideally before the date of the refill.
  • In-person visits and related rules will depend on the state of residence, so be sure to check your provider’s calendar to know how many appointments are possible in a month.
  • Always pay 24 hours in advance.
  • I would advise meeting with your doctor every 15 days to understand how your treatment is progressing and if you are actually getting positive results.
  • Be on time and do not miss any appointments, as there are no refunds for missed sessions.-   Make sure payments are made by Credit/Debit cards, HSA/FSA cards or hard cash because digital payments are not accepted by Klarity.

Done

Done assured me of 25 minutes of uninterrupted time with certified psychiatrists on my first appointment and charged me $199 USD. In addition to this cost, I also paid a $20 USD non-refundable deposit to confirm my initial consultation. The rest of the amount got subtracted from my account 48 hours prior to my appointment.

The membership cost is pretty affordable – $79 USD per month only once I qualify for Done’s long-term treatment! That was a relief.

However, this price does not include my medication costs. Done does not accept insurance to cover monthly subscription payments, but I was able to cover my medication cost with my insurance plan. So, I basically paid nothing (zero copays) for my ADHD medicines, but it depends on the medicine prescribed. The maximum you may spend on medication is $15 USD by health insurance.

Without mental healthcare insurance, the monthly cost of medication could be between $40 to $80 USD. Therefore, in my opinion, of all the telehealth/psychiatry services platforms out there, Done offers one of the most affordable pricing plans, which is remarkable.

3. Insurance Coverage

Insurance Coverage

Klarity

Klarity ADHD does not accept insurance, so I managed to cover my treatment costs with my HSA card. However, it is possible to pay out-of-pocket first and then file a claim with an out-of-network insurance company.

FSA cards are also accepted by practitioners at Klarity ADHD. This is great news because ADHD treatments with medication systematic are not going to burn a huge hole in our pockets now.

Done

Done, unfortunately, did not accept my insurance for enrolling in its membership plan. But there is a ray of hope for people on a shoestring budget like me. Thankfully low-cost medication and treatment were possible because the platform allowed me to use my HSA card benefits. FSA cards can also be utilized.

4. Privacy

Privacy

Klarity

Klarity ADHD is a HIPAA-compliant platform and guarantees the complete safety of customer data. So far, the platform has managed to maintain a clean record and in my opinion scores higher than Done as far as patient and general privacy is concerned.

Done

Done is on par with other popular virtual mental healthcare services, but there have still been reports about the platform selling customer/patient information to marketers anyhow. The privacy policy mentions that there are safeguards employed for data protection but it seems like a vague claim to me. So, please tread carefully!

5. Accessibility

6. Available Treatments

Available Treatments

Klarity

Klarity is great for treating the following mental illnesses:

  • ADHD
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Depression

The platform provides decent teletherapy and face-to-face sessions for more effective mental health treatments.

Done

Done is a platform fully dedicated to treating adults suffering from ADHD of varying severities via correct diagnosis and specialized medication.

I have the experience of being prescribed stimulants by psychiatrists at Done, which are usually considered safe for most ADHD cases. But these can be lethal if you have other mental disorders and physical complications. So, proper diagnosis of any mental condition is crucial to ensure effective treatment.

Done does not provide virtual mental counseling for ADHD and does not even help address other mental disorders. So, you might want to consider Klarity if you want more treatment options for a wider array of mental illnesses that is not just limited to ADHD.

7. Pros and Cons Klarity ADHD

Pros

  • Super flexible pay-on-visit system.
  • Affordable prescription refills costing just $25 USD.
  • Treatment and medication costs can get reimbursed via the submission of Superbills.

  • Stimulant prescription is strictly scrutinized, modified, and monitored regularly.

Cons

  • Services offered are limited to only 30 states.
  • There are no psychotherapy services offered.
  • The jurisdiction of some states mandates opting for a hybrid mental healthcare plan, including both online video calls and offline consultations.
  • The duration of the first session is too short.
  • Diagnosis, treatments, and medication are only limited to treating ADHD, depression, stress, anxiety, & insomnia.
  • No prescriptions or medication is delivered to your place of residence.
  • The final amount to be spent depends on your care provider as discounts are regulated by them.

8. Pros and Cons of Done

Pros

  • Simple sign-up involving a brief evaluation.
  • No history of ADHD diagnosis is needed as proof for further treatment at Done.
  • Up to two 30-minute monthly video calls with your psychiatrist.
  • Free-of-charge delivery of prescription medication at local pharmacies.
  • Easy refills at no cost.

Cons

  • Home delivery of prescription medication, particularly stimulants, is only available in a few states, such as California, Wisconsin, Michigan, etc.
  • Services targeted to treat only ADHD.
  • You need to pass an eligibility test to qualify for comprehensive treatment and utilization of medication management services.
  • No insurance is accepted for the membership plan.
  • The membership cost excludes medication expenses.
  • No counseling services are offered.
  • Unclear privacy policy and data protection protocols.
  • Some customers have regularly complained about not receiving medication despite clearing the initial eligibility evaluation for extended ADHD treatment.

Conclusion

With transparent pricing, an upfront privacy policy, and the scope to address multiple illnesses apart from ADHD, Klarity is my preferred telehealth platform.

Done has done a good job, too, but the treatment remains restricted to addressing only ADHD.

Besides, there are reasonable apprehensions about Done’s prescription methods as well as its ways of securing patient data. I would rather pick Klarity over Done for these reasons.
